Reliable Power Protection – In many ways, power protection is a misnomer, because it essentially means protection from power, or at least protection from power problems. Surges, spikes, low voltage, and noisy power are just a few of the most common types of power problems that can damage equipment, and they happen every day.
While a quality surge suppressor, or surge protector, can provide power protection from surges and spikes, it cannot correct noisy power, low voltage, brownouts or blackout conditions -- only an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) can do that. A UPS not only protects against power problems, it also protects the power itself in case of an outage.
Millions of Dollars in Equipment is destroyed every year because of power problems. Even a momentary outage that simply flickers the lights can do irreparable harm to many types of sensitive equipment, from computers to security systems, to manufacturing and laboratory or hospital equipment. Because of this, even facilities with backup power generators still require a UPS for effective power protection.

There are several main types of UPS power protection devices; the standby UPS, the line interactive UPS, and the online UPS.
Standby UPS systems are only suitable for applications like emergency lighting, where a delay will not damage anything, because they do not immediately switch over to battery power... the process takes a few seconds similar to a backup generator. Line interactive UPS systems offer the best value power protection for more sensitive devices like computers, because they kick over to battery power immediately with no interruption. Some line interactive UPS systems, like APC's Smart-UPS line, provide basic power cleanup as well. AVR boost and trim features can compensate for over-voltage and under-voltage power problems.
The third class of UPS is the online UPS, which completely isolates the device from the power grid, and in doing so can provide power protection form surges and spikes, low voltage and blackout conditions, as well as power noise, frequency and waveform issues, all without any delay.
